Keeping clean colours and light can be difficult without this understanding and the technical knowledge of how light works in the landscape and in the viewer's perspective. The best book I have found dealing with this topic, it DOES explain to the oil painter how to 'fill their paintings with light and colour'.
It is very hard to get good painting information but this book delivers. Not a long review becuase others have said it better, just wanted to give it 5 stars. I also have Griffel's book which is very good but this one is the one I reference more often.Worth 2 times the price.
Good for beginners to advanced. This book helped me launch myself into plein air (painting outdoors) in oils. I think this is the best book I have found so far on plein air painting. I am an advanced artist, but new to oils. He recommends a limited palette of colors, and gives lots of encouragement on getting lots of painting done, by working in simple shapes; simplifying the masses and details, working very small at first. I have done about 40 plein air paintings since reading this book.
You can definitely see his growth in his painting in his second book - also terrific, however the second book - Painting Inside and Out - reads in places like an advertisement for a couple of companies and products - didn't appreciate that much, but otherwise - also a fantastic book - even for the photos alone - It is down to earth, great instruction and his paintings are beautiful. Really terrific book. I highly recommend it for anyone beginning in oil paintings as well as seasoned painters.
I keep re reading. I have been painting and studying art for many decades - this is a really great book.
